The Tilt has won the 2023 Danger Prize for Crime Fiction, announced at an awards dinner at the BAD Sydney Crime Writers Festival on November the second.
This is second time I have won the Danger Prize, after sharing it in 2021 with former homicide detective Gary Jubelin.
Back then there was only one prize, and my fiction book ‘Trust’ shared it with Gary’s non-fiction memoir ‘I Catch Killers’.
Since then, the awards have been revamped and now feature four categories. As well as fiction, there is a prize for non-fiction (Jonathon Butler – ‘The Boy in the Dress’); debut fiction (Matthew Spencer – ‘Black River) and a people’s choice award (Rachel Franks – ‘An Uncommon Hangman’).
The judging criteria calls for “books that explore and shed light on crime and justice issues in Australia” and “reward crime writing that has its finger on the pulse on the Australian experience, both past and present.”
I am delighted to have won this award – and to participate in the festival which just goes from strength to strength!
